  4.     It has been 25 years since a tearful Lee Kuan Yew marked
  5. the traumatic birth of his island republic by announcing that
  6. Singapore had been expelled from the two-year-old Federation of
  7. Malaysia. Singapore's 2.7 million citizens are bracing for
  8. another wrenching departure this week as Lee, 67, retires. As
  9. Lee's successor, 49-year-old Goh Chok Tong, put it, "My greatest
  10. challenge is just to maintain standards."

  12.     Under Lee's firm and steady guidance, the port has evolved
  13. into a prosperous hub of commerce. But some Singaporeans have
  14. questioned the republic's puritanical social strictures, which
  15. include a campaign against overeating in restaurants. Meanwhile,
  16. Lee will retain considerable power as secretary-general of the
  17. ruling party and a senior minister in the Prime Minister's
  18. office.
